ShreveCorps Program

Program Description

ShreveCorps is committed to addressing food deserts through community gardening and urban farming and by providing children in our neighborhoods with gardening, nutrition, and healthy cooking lessons as part of a Healthy Futures initiative in Shreveport, LA.

ShreveCorps members roles:

  • Complete a term of service, including minimum number of service hours

  • Teach children key steps to take toward healthier lifestyles

  • Cultivate community gardens in local food desert neighborhoods

  • Assist in the recruitment and training of volunteers as well as new members

  • Participate in Household Hazardous Waste events

  • Contribute in the Bi-Annual tree giveaways

ShreveCorps member eligibility:

  • Minimum of 17 years of age by the day of enrollment

  • A U.S citizen, U.S. National, or a lawful permanent resident of the United States

  • Have a high school diploma or working to obtain one, or equivalent

  • Maintain a positive attitude

  • Desire to serve as a positive, knowledgeable, and kind role model for children

  • Willingness to work outdoors in the elements

  • Work as a team with individuals from diverse backgrounds

  • No prior gardening or teaching experience required

ShreveCorps is national award-winning program and has been recognized by President Clinton, Governor Blanco, Louisiana Senators Breaux and Landrieu, Innovations in Civic Participation (ICP), and the American Association of State Service Commissions (ASC) as one of the Most Innovative AmeriCorps Programs in the United States. Benefits

ShreveCorps members will receive a biweekly living allowance and an education award upon completion of their term. This award may be used to help pay off student loans or to finance college, graduate school, or vocational training. Beyond these benefits, members will learn new skills, take on new responsibilities, and know the satisfaction of making a difference in their community.
